Biography
Orson Sproule is a dynamic and multifaceted musician whose work spans the genres of jazz, funk, R&B, soul, and hip hop. With a deep-rooted passion for music and a profound dedication to his craft, Orson has made significant strides in the music scene, showcasing his talents as a musician and educator.
Orson started playing the drums at the age of twelve and went on to play in multiple All-County and All-State ensembles in New York. Orson's collegiate experience began at Hobart and William Smith Colleges, where he graduated with a bachelor's degree in music with honors, and was a two time recipient of the prestigious Robert M. Steele Award for Excellence in Instrumental Music. He continued his studies at the University of Iowa, earning a master's degree in jazz studies. There, he served as a graduate teaching assistant, teaching jazz history and contributing to various ensembles, including several small combos, the Jazz Repertory Ensemble, and the Johnson County Landmark Ensemble. Orson also received a master's degree in business administration with a concentration in music from the Berklee College of Music and Southern New Hampshire University joint program.
Orson’s time in academia has also contributed to several research projects surrounding the evolution and current state of hip hop. His works “Four Voices: Hip Hop’s Role in Interrogating and Redefining the Musical Canon Through Craftsmanship, Innovation, and Social Currency,” and “The Evolution of Flow and Its Role in the Growth of Hip Hop” have been presented at multiple conferences, research showcases, and donor events.
Orson's performance credentials are equally impressive, having graced the stages of notable venues, including the renowned Rochester International Jazz Festival, Hancher Auditorium in Iowa City, and many other theaters, festivals, and events across the United States, namely the Central New York, Fingerlakes, and Midwest regions. His ability to connect with audiences and fellow musicians alike has solidified his reputation as a sought-after performer and collaborator.
Currently, Orson is actively recording and releasing music, with his latest project, "Shades of Opal," soon to be released on Bandcamp. This album encapsulates his artistic vision, blending his various musical influences into a captivating listening experience. He has also recorded on several other albums and shorter projects as both a drum set player and percussionist.
Orson has studied with a variety of incomparable drummers, including Kathy Dinardo, Steve Curry, Rich Thompson, Jimmy Johns, Jim Dreier, and Michael D’Angelo. In addition, Orson's influences include drummers such as Max Roach, Philly Joe Jones, Elvin Jones, Steve Gadd, and Nate Smith. These legendary figures inspire his unique sound, which reflects both traditional jazz elements and modern stylistic innovations.
